EPF, pension and EDLI claims after a member’s death: a family guide

A practical guide for women and families handling an EPFO member’s death claim, with a clear distinction between provident-fund savings, family pension and EDLI insurance and instructions to confirm the current portal checklist.

In this guide

One death may involve three different EPFO benefits

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation administers separate provident-fund, pension and insurance schemes. The family’s eligibility depends on the member’s service, scheme membership, nomination and family details. Ask EPFO to assess each benefit rather than treating them as one payment.

Provident fund is the member’s accumulated account balance

The EPF claim concerns the balance and any applicable interest in the member’s account. EPFO rules and a valid nomination or other claimant evidence determine who can file. Keep the member’s UAN and account information private while you ask for the current claim route.

EDLI is a separate insurance benefit with its own conditions

The Employees’ Deposit Linked Insurance Scheme may provide an assurance benefit in qualifying member-death cases, including specified deaths while in service. Ask EPFO to check the service record and current scheme terms; do not assume every death or every claimant qualifies.

Identify the member record and ask who may claim

Start with the member’s last employer and the EPFO member portal. If the person who died did not leave a clear nomination or the family has different claimants, ask the regional office for written guidance before filing conflicting applications.

Check the nominee and family record carefully

Ask EPFO what nomination is recorded and which scheme it covers. A person may be an EPF nominee but not the person eligible for every EPS benefit. If the nomination conflicts with a will, succession claim or family entitlement, get qualified advice before distributing money.

Record whether the member died in service or after leaving work

This fact can affect EDLI and pension routes. Ask the employer for the last contribution and employment-status record, and ask EPFO to confirm what it will use. Do not infer eligibility from the member’s last payslip alone.

File through the current EPFO death-claim service

EPFO’s member portal lists a death-claim route for nominees and a separate pension route for family or nominee claimants. Screens and forms can change, so use the live official portal or regional office rather than relying on an old downloaded form.

Use the official portal or ask the regional office for a paper process

Open the EPFO Unified Member Portal and select the death-claim service that matches the benefit. If you cannot log in, a nominee or family claimant is not the member; ask the employer or EPFO office how to file as the claimant. Keep the acknowledgement and claim reference.

File each benefit claim and follow its status

Check that EPF, pension and EDLI were each considered where potentially applicable. Save submission dates, missing-document requests, acknowledgements and bank credits. If a portal shows a rejection, ask what record or rule caused it before submitting a correction.

Resolve a delay, missing nomination or disagreement

A delayed claim may involve an employer record, claimant status, service history or missing document. Keep your inquiry factual and ask which official can review it.

Ask the last employer to correct a missing service or contribution entry

Request a written response about the last working day, member ID, contribution history and any date mismatch. Keep the employer’s acknowledgement and send the correction through the route EPFO specifies.

Use EPFO’s grievance channel or regional office

Share the UAN or claim reference privately, state which benefit is pending and attach only the records requested. Ask for the reason and escalation contact. Do not post Aadhaar, bank details, death certificates or children’s information publicly.

Questions about EPFO claims after a death

Are EPF, EPS family pension and EDLI the same claim?

No. They arise under separate schemes and have different eligibility rules. Ask EPFO to assess each one separately for the member’s service and family circumstances.

Can a wife or nominee claim without knowing the UAN?

Ask the last employer or EPFO regional office to help locate the member account using official records. The claimant route and evidence vary; do not use an unofficial agent or share passwords.

What if the person named in the EPF nomination is not the spouse?

Do not assume the nomination answers all family or inheritance questions. Ask EPFO which benefit and scheme the nomination covers, and consult a lawyer if it conflicts with another claim or succession document.
