GI tag registration in India: a guide for women artisan groups
Learn how a women-led producer collective can assess an Indian geographical indication, document its link to place, apply through a representative body and help individual producers register as authorised users.
In this guide
Check whether a geographical indication fits
A GI identifies goods whose quality, reputation or other characteristic is linked to a place. It is a community right with a representative registered proprietor and individual authorised users.
A GI connects goods with a geographic origin
India's GI Registry covers goods such as agricultural, natural, handicraft and industrial goods where the claimed quality, reputation or characteristic is attributable to a place. A GI is not a generic label that any seller can claim for a similar product.
The applicant must represent the producers' interests
An association of persons or producers, organisation or authority can apply if it represents the concerned producers. A women-led collective should document its membership, decision-making authority and how producers across the relevant area can participate.
Registration does not belong to one founder alone
The registered proprietor is the representative body recorded in the GI register. Individual producers can apply to become authorised users for a registered GI. This structure can help protect a shared product identity while recognising the producers who make or handle the goods.
| Evidence area | What the collective has | Who will maintain it |
|---|---|---|
| Place and boundary | Map, village list and source | |
| Product characteristics and production method | Specifications and dated examples | |
| Producer membership and representation | Member register and meeting decisions | |
| Quality checks and inspection structure | Standards, responsible body and records | |
| Women producers' control and benefit-sharing | Written governance and payment rules |
Build the case before filing
Explain the product's special characteristics
The application statement of case should explain the goods, the place connection, the special characteristics and how the relevant standards are maintained. Support claims with reliable production, historical, technical or community records instead of relying on a name alone.
Prepare maps, producer details and quality controls
IP India's filing guidance asks for a map of the region and details of the inspection structure, along with producer and applicant information. Agree who checks product standards, handles complaints and protects the GI from misuse before asking the Registry to approve those arrangements.
Set rules for fair participation
A strong collective process makes eligibility and access understandable to small producers, home-based makers, women from marginalised communities and new members. Decide in advance how fees, documentation help, quality checks, representation and any commercial benefits will be managed.
File, respond and register producers as authorised users
Use the official GI forms and fee schedule
The Registry lists forms for a GI application and for registration of an authorised user. The filing guidance currently identifies Form GI-1 series for a registration application and a prescribed fee; confirm the live forms, fee, copies and submission method on IP India's current service before filing.
Answer scrutiny and examination questions on time
The filing process includes preliminary scrutiny, examination and possible objections or a show-cause stage. Keep a single file for notices and deadlines, and have the producer body approve factual statements before its representative submits a response.
Help each eligible producer apply for authorised-user status
After a GI is registered, a producer can apply in the prescribed form to be entered as an authorised user. Keep the GI registration details, proof of producer status and current official requirements together; registration of the GI does not automatically place every maker in Part B of the register.
Questions about GI tags and artisan collectives
Can an individual artisan register a GI for herself?
A GI application is made by an association, producers' organisation, authority or other body that represents producers' interests. An individual producer may apply as an authorised user for an already registered GI.
Can a collective claim a famous craft name from another region?
A GI requires a genuine link between the goods and the claimed geographic area. The Registry can refuse confusing, misleading or otherwise ineligible indications. Document the real production area and seek specialist help before making public claims.
How long does a GI registration last?
IP India states that a registered GI is valid for 10 years and may be renewed for further 10-year periods. Assign responsibility and funding for renewal and quality-control records so the protection does not lapse through missed administration.
Will a GI automatically raise artisans' income?
No. Registration protects the geographical indication, but market access, bargaining power, product quality, transparent governance and fair benefit-sharing need separate work. A GI certificate by itself does not guarantee sales or higher prices.
