What is Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY)?
JSY is a National Health Mission programme that links cash assistance with institutional delivery and maternal-care support. It aims to encourage eligible pregnant women to deliver in a health facility. Eligibility is not identical across India: the NHM page distinguishes low-performing and high-performing State categories and also lists different routes for accredited private institutions. Confirm the current category and rules with your district health office or ASHA before making a financial plan.
Eligibility depends on the State category and delivery facility
The NHM page lists all pregnant women delivering at government health centres in low-performing States as eligible for the mother’s package. In high-performing States, it lists BPL, Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe women delivering at government centres. For accredited private institutions, it lists BPL/SC/ST women in both categories. Ask whether the facility is accredited and which current rule applies to you.
The NHM page separates the mother’s package from ASHA support
The published table shows a mother’s package and a separate ASHA package. It lists the mother’s amount as ₹1,400 in rural and ₹1,000 in urban areas for the low-performing category, and ₹700 rural and ₹600 urban for the high-performing category. The table’s combined totals include the ASHA package; do not mistake that total for the mother’s payment. Verify current rates locally.
JSY is linked to institutional delivery
The listed assistance is for eligible women delivering at a qualifying government health centre or accredited private institution, according to the applicable category. Ask the facility or ASHA what records are needed, how the claim is entered and where to check its status. JSY cash assistance is different from JSSK’s free-care entitlements.

How can you check eligibility and prepare documents?
Ask the district health team which category applies
The NHM information uses low-performing and high-performing categories and includes older State or Union Territory names. Ask the district health office, ASHA or facility which current category applies to your residence and which documents establish the listed eligibility. Do not rely on a copied table without checking its current use.
Confirm the facility before delivery where possible
Ask whether the planned government facility or private hospital is within the applicable JSY route and, for a private hospital, whether it is accredited for the scheme. If your delivery plan changes because of an emergency, prioritise care and ask the facility’s scheme desk how to document the change.
Keep application and payment details safely
Ask what identity, residence, category or bank details are required under the local process. Keep copies of any form, acknowledgement, discharge record and payment message. Never give an OTP, ATM PIN or bank password to someone who says it is needed to release JSY money.
If the JSY payment is delayed or unclear
Ask which office owns the next step
Contact the facility or ASHA who helped with the delivery claim and ask whether it was submitted, whether information is missing and which office handles payment status. Note the date, contact person and reference number. Request a written explanation if the claim is rejected or held.
Separate JSY cash from free maternity care
JSY is cash assistance for eligible institutional delivery. JSSK is a different programme that sets out free public-facility delivery, medicines, diagnostics, blood and transport entitlements. Ask for each route separately if you need both; one does not automatically prove the other was processed.
Do not postpone urgent medical care for a benefit question
JSY payment is not an emergency-care approval. If you or the baby needs urgent attention, go to the nearest appropriate health facility or call 112 for emergency help where available. Scheme questions can be followed up after immediate care is arranged.

Does every pregnant woman receive the same JSY amount?
No. The NHM page differentiates eligibility and the mother’s listed amount by State performance category and rural or urban area. Confirm the current category, facility route and amount with your district health office.
Is the ASHA package part of the mother’s payment?
The NHM table shows a separate ASHA package alongside the mother’s package. Its combined total should not be read as the amount payable to the mother. Ask the local JSY contact to confirm the mother’s amount.
Can a woman deliver at a private hospital and claim JSY?
The NHM page lists BPL/SC/ST women delivering at accredited private institutions under both State categories. Accreditation and current local requirements matter, so confirm the hospital and documents before relying on this route where possible.
Is JSY the same as PMMVY or JSSK?
No. JSY is linked to cash assistance for eligible institutional delivery. PMMVY is a separate maternity-benefit scheme with its own eligibility and application rules. JSSK covers specified free-care entitlements at public health facilities. Check each scheme on its own terms.
