What protections apply to a microfinance borrower?
RBI's microfinance framework covers qualifying collateral-free loans to a household with annual income up to ₹3 lakh, when made by the regulated entities covered by the Directions. Among its protections, a lender must assess the household's repayment capacity and ensure the total monthly repayment obligations on all loans do not exceed 50% of monthly household income. This is a regulatory ceiling, not a recommendation that a household borrow up to that amount.
Your household's other loan payments matter
Before agreeing, list every existing monthly instalment or repayment in the household. Ask the lender to show how it assessed income, existing obligations and the proposed instalment. If a payment would leave too little for food, rent, medicines, school or seasonal income changes, explain that clearly and consider declining or asking for a smaller amount.
You do not have to make every household member a borrower
RBI's FAQ clarifies that all members of a household are not required to become borrowers of a microfinance loan. Ask the lender to explain whose name will be on the loan, who is legally responsible for repayment and why each signature is requested. Never sign a blank form or let someone use your identity without understanding the obligation.
Compare the full cost, not just the instalment
Ask for the interest rate, the annualised cost, any fees, the repayment schedule and the amount you will repay overall. The Directions require transparent disclosures and a loan card in a language the borrower understands. Compare the written terms from more than one lender where practical; RBI does not set one universal interest rate for every microfinance loan.
| Monthly household income | Existing monthly loan payments | Proposed instalment | Total monthly obligations | Essential costs after debt | Questions for lender |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ₹ | ₹ | ₹ | ₹ | ₹ | |
| ₹ | ₹ | ₹ | ₹ | ₹ |
What must you check on the loan card and agreement?
Ask for the documents before accepting the loan and take time to read or have them read aloud in a language you understand. A field worker's verbal explanation is not a substitute for the written terms.
Match the amount, rate and dates
Check the sanctioned amount, amount actually disbursed, interest rate, instalment amount and due dates, total repayment, late or penal charges, and the lender's contact for complaints. Ask for a receipt for every payment. Keep the loan card and payment records somewhere you can access independently.
Choose add-on products freely
Non-credit products sold alongside a microfinance loan must be voluntary, with the fee and terms made clear. Ask what the product provides, whether it is optional and how to decline or cancel it. A person should not be told that an unrelated product is compulsory for the loan unless the written rule and lender terms support that claim.
Do not hand over control of your documents or account
Keep your own copy of the signed agreement and payment receipts. Do not share an OTP, PIN or password with a lender, agent or family member. If someone else is pressuring you to borrow or keeping the money, consider whether it is safe to discuss this privately with the lender or a trusted support person.
What if you cannot pay or a recovery agent mistreats you?
Contact the lender early, using its official customer-care or grievance channel. A missed payment does not erase the lender's responsibility to explain the account and follow applicable conduct rules. Keep the discussion factual and ask for the available process in writing.
Ask for an account statement and explain the change
Tell the lender what changed, when you expect income and what amount you can realistically manage. Ask it to confirm the outstanding balance, any charges and the grievance contact. Do not promise a payment date you cannot meet, and do not take a new high-cost loan simply to silence an agent without comparing the consequences.
Record harassment safely
Write down dates, times, names or numbers, words used, witnesses and payment demands. Save messages and receipts if doing so is safe. Ask the lender for its grievance officer and the identity of the authorised recovery channel. If there is an immediate threat or physical danger, seek local emergency help.
Escalate a complaint through the lender and RBI route
Submit a written complaint to the regulated lender and keep the acknowledgement. If it is not resolved, check whether the lender is covered by the current RBI Ombudsman Scheme and whether its response or the 30-day period allows escalation. Use RBI's official CMS and do not pay an intermediary to file.
Microfinance loans in India: FAQs
Is the 50% repayment limit based on one woman's income?
It is assessed at the household level under the RBI Directions. The lender should consider the household's income and total existing loan obligations. Ask it to show the calculation used for your application.
Does RBI fix one interest rate for all microfinance loans?
No single rate applies to every lender and borrower. Compare the written rate, annualised cost, fees and repayment schedule, and ask the lender where its current minimum, maximum and average rates are displayed.
Can an add-on product be forced on me?
RBI says non-credit products must be issued with the borrower's full consent and their fees must be disclosed. Ask for the choice and cost in writing before agreeing.
Does a microfinance loan require collateral?
RBI's qualifying microfinance-loan definition is a collateral-free loan to a qualifying low-income household. Ask the lender to explain any document or security it is requesting and confirm the product classification before signing.
Words you can use
Ask the lender to show affordability and cost
Before accepting a group or individual microfinance loan
“Please show me the household income and existing-loan calculation, the total monthly obligations after this loan, the annualised cost, every fee and the full repayment schedule. I would like the loan card and agreement in a language I understand before I decide.”
Report a repayment or recovery concern
When a payment record is wrong or a recovery interaction feels threatening
“I am writing about loan [reference]. On [date], [what happened]. Please send the current account statement, explain each charge, identify the authorised grievance contact and confirm how you will investigate this complaint.”
