FSSAI registration for a home food business in India: rules and steps

A practical guide for women selling food from home or online: the FSSAI turnover thresholds effective from April 2026, how to use FoSCoS, food-safety basics and the limits of a registration certificate.

In this guide

Check the food activity and the current FSSAI category

A home address does not by itself exempt a regular food business from food-safety registration or licensing. Choose the category from the actual activity and current FoSCoS criteria before accepting orders.

The 2026 turnover thresholds changed

For new applications from 1 April 2026, FSSAI lists registration up to annual turnover of ₹1.5 crore, a State licence above ₹1.5 crore and up to ₹50 crore, and a Central licence above ₹50 crore. These figures replace the earlier turnover cut-offs; check FoSCoS for the correct kind of business, product and any activity-specific criteria before applying.

Online and home-based selling are still food-business activities

Preparing, packing, storing, distributing or selling food as a business can require FSSAI authorisation even when the kitchen is at home or orders arrive through a social-media or marketplace page. The right application depends on what you do, where food is handled and the business category shown on FoSCoS.

Registration is not a food-safety exemption

FSSAI describes perpetual validity for licences and registrations under its 2026 reforms, but food businesses must still follow applicable hygiene, product-safety, labelling and recordkeeping rules. A certificate does not certify every recipe or replace other permissions that may apply to a premises or product.

Apply through the official FoSCoS portal

The application should describe the operation accurately. If a home kitchen also stores, packs or sells food from another site, include the real arrangement rather than selecting a simpler category just to move through the form.

Choose the kind of business that matches the work

Review the FoSCoS eligibility tool for manufacturing, food service, retail, storage, transport or other activities. A maker who packs and sells products may need to report more than one relevant activity; confirm the correct combination in the live portal.

Keep the identity and premises evidence consistent

Use the business name, address, contact details, product information and proof of premises requested by the portal. If the kitchen is rented or shared, check what consent or occupancy evidence the application requires before filing.

Submit and pay only on FoSCoS

Use the official FSSAI portal to apply, track queries and download the issued certificate. Avoid agents who promise guaranteed approval or ask for an OTP, password or payment to a personal account.

Build safe kitchen and order routines

A low application threshold does not lower the duty to make food safely. Set up repeatable controls that fit the product and the scale of production.

Separate ingredients, allergens and ready-to-eat food

Keep raw and cooked items apart, use clean utensils and surfaces, control pests and water quality, and prevent allergen cross-contact. Tell customers about relevant allergens accurately; do not make a medical or health claim that the product cannot support.

Keep a simple batch and dispatch record

Record the production date or batch code, ingredients and supplier, quantity made, storage conditions, orders and dispatch date. These details help trace a complaint or recall and show which products need to be held back.

Avoid common mistakes when starting from home

Check special products and other permissions

Meat, dairy, packaged drinking water, infant food, imported food and other regulated activities can have additional safety, testing or operational requirements. Local premises, fire, municipal or trade permissions may also apply; FSSAI registration does not replace them.

Questions about FSSAI for a home food business

Do perpetual-validity certificates still need renewal?

FSSAI says licences and registrations covered by the 2026 reforms do not need periodic renewal, but safety duties and accurate records continue. Existing operators should check how their certificate is shown or migrated in FoSCoS.
