What Udyam registration does

Udyam is the Government of India's online process for classifying and registering eligible micro, small and medium enterprises. It can be useful evidence when dealing with lenders or programmes, but registration alone does not provide a loan, grant, contract or guaranteed benefit.

Registration is free and paperless

The official Ministry of MSME portal says Udyam registration has no fee, does not require document uploads, and uses self-declared information checked against government databases. Use the government portal or an authorised government single-window route only.

The enterprise—not the applicant's gender—gets classified

As of 1 April 2025, the portal lists a micro enterprise ceiling of ₹2.5 crore investment and ₹10 crore turnover; small, ₹25 crore and ₹100 crore; medium, ₹125 crore and ₹500 crore. Classification uses both measures and the applicable rules, not a women-only threshold.

One registration can include several activities

The official portal says an enterprise should not file more than one Udyam registration, but it can add manufacturing, service or other activities to the same registration. Keep the activity and contact details accurate and current.

Prepare the details and register safely

The form is self-declaration based, but the information still needs to be accurate. Take time to check identity and enterprise records before submitting an application.

Use the correct Aadhaar and enterprise details

The official portal directs proprietors to use the proprietor's Aadhaar; partnerships and other entity types use the authorised person's details under the portal's instructions. PAN and GST-linked information is checked where applicable. Follow the form shown for the actual legal structure.

Keep the applicant's phone and email accessible

OTP and later account access may depend on contact details. The woman owner should be able to receive notices, retrieve the registration and correct the information. Avoid using an agent's email or phone as the only recovery route.

Save the registration number and certificate

After submission, keep the acknowledgement and download the certificate from the official portal. Check the name, address, activity, category and contact information for errors and use the official update route if something needs correction.

Use the certificate where it is actually needed

Udyam is an identity and classification record for an enterprise. A lender, marketplace or scheme may ask for it, but each service has separate conditions and a separate decision.

Ask the lender or scheme for its exact requirement

For a MUDRA loan, GeM seller onboarding, or a credit guarantee, confirm whether Udyam is required, which enterprise name must match, and whether the registration must be active or updated. A certificate does not replace the loan application or eligibility checks.

Check whether records still match business reality

Turnover, investment, address, contact, PAN and GST data may change. Use the portal's current update or reclassification guidance when the business changes; retain reliable books and tax records supporting the details declared.

Avoid paid lookalike websites

The Ministry warns that private websites, apps, agencies and people are not authorised to conduct MSME registration as a paid service. If a site asks for a mandatory fee, compare its address with the official government domain before sharing identity or business data.

Fix a failed or incorrect registration

A typo or mismatch should be corrected through official account access. Do not create another registration to get around an error because the portal says one enterprise should have one registration.

Read the portal message and identify the mismatched field

Check whether the issue is Aadhaar authentication, PAN or GST data, enterprise name, legal structure or an activity entry. Compare the form with the source record before submitting a correction.

Use the official update and help options

Sign in through the Udyam website and follow its current update, print or verification path. Save screenshots or copies of the error, submitted correction and any ticket number for follow-up.

Protect business identity information

Do not send an Aadhaar OTP, PAN image, bank password or remote-access permission to an unsolicited caller. Contact the official portal support channel using details published on the government website.

Common questions about Udyam and women-owned businesses

Is there a separate Udyam form for women?

The official portal registers and classifies eligible enterprises. It does not set a separate MSME size threshold for women; a later scheme or procurement category may separately ask how the enterprise is owned or led.

Does Udyam registration cost money?

The official government portal says registration is free. You may choose professional help for unrelated business advice, but payment to a private agent is not a government registration fee.

Which turnover and investment limits apply now?

The official portal lists the revised limits effective 1 April 2025. Recheck the portal if the business is near a threshold or the rules change, because government data can affect classification.
