IEC for women exporters in India: apply, check and update the code

A step-by-step guide to the Directorate General of Foreign Trade's Importer-Exporter Code, including who needs it, the online application, annual update, documents and export rules that an IEC does not replace.

In this guide

What an IEC is and when an exporter needs it

The Importer-Exporter Code (IEC) is a DGFT identity used for import and export activity. It is issued online and is separate from a buyer contract, customs clearance, GST treatment or a product-specific licence.

Apply through the official DGFT portal

DGFT processes new IEC applications online. Use the current application form and document list, since the department can revise validation steps and required evidence.

Enter the entity, bank and contact details carefully

Use the entity's PAN, legal name, constitution, address, bank proof and authorised person's details as required by the live form. DGFT may validate details electronically and can ask for further documents.

Update the IEC every year and keep it active

An IEC is not a one-time task that can be ignored after issue. The Foreign Trade Policy requires an annual electronic update even when the details have not changed.

Keep business access and email under the owner's control

Use a business-controlled phone and email and update staff or address changes promptly. A family member or broker may help prepare a form, but the woman exporter should retain access to the IEC profile and its notifications.

Prepare the first shipment beyond the IEC

Export readiness also depends on the product, buyer, country, transport route and payment terms. An IEC by itself does not confirm that the shipment is legal or commercially viable.

Agree on price, delivery and payment terms in writing

Identify who pays freight, insurance, bank charges, inspection, returns and customs costs. Use an appropriate written sales contract and ask a trade or banking professional about payment, foreign-exchange and tax treatment for the specific transaction.

Common questions about IEC for women exporters

Do service exporters always need an IEC?

The Foreign Trade Policy makes an IEC necessary for services or technology when the provider seeks benefits under that policy. Check the applicable service category and exemptions with DGFT.
