What a MUDRA loan can fund
Pradhan Mantri MUDRA Yojana (PMMY) supports eligible income-generating micro businesses. It is a repayable loan, and the bank or other participating lender decides whether the business and requested amount meet its credit rules.
Check that the business activity fits
The official scheme covers non-farm businesses in manufacturing, trading and services, as well as allied activities such as dairy, poultry and beekeeping. Crop cultivation itself follows different agriculture-credit routes. Describe the actual activity and use of funds to the lender.
Choose the category by amount and history
Shishu covers loans up to ₹50,000; Kishore is above ₹50,000 and up to ₹5 lakh; Tarun is above ₹5 lakh and up to ₹10 lakh. Tarun Plus, introduced from 24 October 2024, is above ₹10 lakh and up to ₹20 lakh only for an entrepreneur who has taken and successfully repaid a previous Tarun loan.
Understand the collateral-free feature
The scheme is designed for collateral-free credit, but that does not mean automatic approval, free money or no repayment obligation. A lender may still assess the applicant's cash flow, credit history, business viability and primary security for financed assets.
| Estimate | Amount or date | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Equipment, stock or working capital needed | Quotation / inventory | |
| My contribution and other funds | Savings / confirmed support | |
| Expected monthly sales and essential costs | Past records / realistic estimate | |
| Loan instalment and first due date | Written lender offer |
Prepare before you approach a lender
A short, honest business plan helps a lender understand why the money is needed and how repayments could be made. The required documents vary by lender and loan type, so confirm the list before visiting.
Write down the specific use of each rupee
Separate one-time costs such as equipment from recurring costs such as stock, rent or wages. Collect current quotations where possible and request only an amount that matches the plan; an available category ceiling is not a recommended borrowing amount.
Keep identity and business evidence ready
Ask the chosen bank, NBFC or microfinance institution for its current checklist. It may ask for identity, address, bank, business or registration details and estimates. Existing enterprises can ask whether Udyam registration and business records are useful for this application.
Compare the written repayment terms
Before signing, check the interest rate, rate-reset method, instalment amount, loan period, fees, late-payment consequences, insurance add-ons and any asset security. Rates and terms are lender-specific; request a sanction letter or key facts in writing.
Apply and keep control of the account
Apply directly to an eligible participating lender or use an official government route where the scheme is available. The woman who will owe the money should review and authorise the application herself.
Use a listed bank or lending institution
PMMY loans are delivered through participating public and private banks, regional rural banks, small finance banks, NBFCs and microfinance institutions. JanSamarth also lists PMMY among its credit-linked schemes; confirm the current application path and participating lender there.
Save the application and every loan document
Keep a copy of the form, application reference, sanction letter, repayment schedule, signed mandate and disbursement record. Check the business account after disbursal and confirm that the funds match the approved purpose and amount.
Do not pay for a guaranteed sanction
No agent can promise that a lender will approve a loan. Never hand over an OTP, PIN, blank cheque or blank signed form. If an intermediary charges a fee or changes the proposed loan, ask the lender directly whether that cost is official.
If the application is delayed or declined
A rejection is not proof that the business idea has no value. Ask for the lender's stated reason and use it to correct a document gap, revise the amount or compare another suitable route without taking unaffordable debt.
Ask for the reason and next step in writing
Check whether the issue concerns incomplete evidence, repayment capacity, credit information or the business proposal. Ask how to correct it and whether a fresh application is permitted; do not submit multiple duplicate applications to hide a previous decision.
Escalate a service complaint through the lender
Use the bank or financial institution's grievance process and retain the complaint number. If it remains unresolved, ask which external regulator or grievance channel applies to that type of lender and complaint.
Rework the plan before borrowing elsewhere
Reduce the requested amount, phase purchases or test demand with a smaller investment if that keeps the business viable. Compare SHG bank linkage, state programmes or other official credit routes; each has separate eligibility and repayment terms.
Common questions about MUDRA loans for women
Is MUDRA a grant for women?
No. PMMY is credit that must be repaid. A woman can apply for an eligible business loan, but approval, amount, price and repayment schedule depend on the participating lender's assessment.
Can a first-time borrower get ₹20 lakh?
Not through Tarun Plus unless the entrepreneur has previously taken and successfully repaid a Tarun-category loan. Ask the lender which category matches the applicant's history and proposed amount.
Does collateral-free mean the lender cannot ask for anything?
No. The scheme says collateral is not required, but the borrower still signs a credit agreement and must repay. The lender can assess viability and may take primary security in assets purchased with the loan, subject to applicable rules.
Where do I check the current scheme details?
Start with the Department of Financial Services PMMY page and confirm the application route, documents, rates and repayment terms with the chosen lender or the official JanSamarth portal.
